Small Business Grants in Canada: What's Actually Available Right Now

Search for Canadian small business grants and you'll find long lists that mix open programs, closed programs, and programs that stopped existing years ago. This guide sticks to what we can point to as of October 2026, and says plainly where something has changed. Always confirm a program's current status on the official government page before you invest time in an application.

Programs that are open or ongoing

  • NRC IRAP — continuous intake, for incorporated businesses doing technology-driven innovation. It starts with a call to a regional Industrial Technology Advisor, not a form.
  • SR&ED — a tax incentive for R&D, not a grant you apply for. For Canadian-controlled private corporations, the expenditure limit for the enhanced refundable credit is currently $3 million.
  • Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) — non-repayable funding of up to $3 million for eligible businesses, delivered through Canada's regional development agencies and open until December 31, 2027. A minimum revenue threshold applies.

Programs that have closed or changed

  • CanExport SMEs — the 2026-27 intake closed on August 31, 2026, and the program was scaled back from earlier years.
  • Canada Digital Adoption Program — discontinued in 2025. Many websites still list it as available.

Don't forget your province

Provincial and territorial programs are often easier to win than federal ones because the pool of applicants is smaller. Examples include the B.C. Employer Training Grant and Quebec's ESSOR program. Each province runs its own mix of training, hiring, export and innovation funding, and the rules differ widely.

A quick way to narrow it down

  • Doing R&D or building something technically new? Start with SR&ED and IRAP.
  • Hit by tariffs or looking to adapt? Look at RTRI through your regional development agency.
  • Hiring or training staff? Check your province first.
  • Need capital rather than a grant? Look at loan programs such as the Canada Small Business Financing Program.

Funding in this space changes fast. A program that was open last quarter may be closed today, which is why checking the date a program was last verified matters as much as the program itself.
